Historic fabric map of western Ukraine on display in AVÌìÌà Library

A silk map of western Ukraine that was carried by British or other NATO pilots during the Cold War is on display at the Library of AVÌìÌÃ’s Kelowna campus. The map, part of the private collection of Geography Professor Terence Day, depicts regions of western Ukraine and surrounding countries. It was created for pilots to use in the event they crashed or parachuted into enemy territory and needed to escape or evade others. A map from the world’s first atlas, produced in 1570, offers a window not only into the geography of the time, but a chance to learn about a pioneering female colourist and the many others who have made indelible contributions to cartography ever since. The map, which depicts the surrounding areas of Milan, Spain, some 450 years ago, will be on display at AVÌìÌÃ’s Kelowna Campus Library for International Women’s day until March 8.
